Hello, I’m from Mongolia, and I’m planing to go to Korea and seek cosmetic treatment for a scar on my wife’s knee. My wife had an accident on 18 October 2014, which has left her with a wound and deep vertical scar on her knee.
Is it possible to have cosmetic treatment to remove the scar and have it go back to how it was before? What types of treatments are available and what is the estimated total cost? Including all expenses to recover such as surgery price, care and treatment before and after surgery.
- Please share your wife’s result if it works. I will really appreciate it

Thank you for your question. Scars like the one on your wife’s knee can pose challenges and complications to treat because it’s located on a major joint that is frequently stretching the skin by bending and moving.
There are several methods that can be used, but for improved results, placing her knee in a cast after a scar revision surgery will help restrict its mobility, and allow for the wound recovery process to optimally heal the area post operation. A scar revision may involve excision or removal of the wound and scarred skin, which would then be closed and sutured (stitched) along vertically using an advanced technique. It will not completely remove the scar, but can minimize it significantly. However, we do not often recommend this procedure on the knees and elbows because it requires the patient to follow strict post-operative care, and if not followed, can cause complications.
A less invasive method, which would not require restricted postoperative mobility, would be laser treatments such as Fraxel to lighten the color of the scar, but this would require more than one treatment to see results.
We recommend having a face-to-face consultation with a plastic surgeon to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment options.
Thank you for your detailed question and photos. Good Plastic Surgery specializes in scar treatment. Regarding the treatment and surgery process, we would excise or surgically cut the entire scarred area out, and then suture or stich together the healthy skin around it. After surgery, the primary scar will disappear, but there will be a newer, but much less noticeable scar (in the form of a fine line). The total cost is about 300,000 Korean Won (~$265 USD) per centimeter. The cost and proper diagnosis can be discussed in more detail with the clinic and doctor.
The first thing to be considered is narrowing the scar line by some kind of scar revision surgery. Knees, however, are very difficult to manage because after treatment, patients will keep moving and using them all the time. That’s why there are some cases where the final results are not really good even if the surgery itself was successful.
If your wife can follow an intensive 6-months of postoperative care of the treated area, then we recommend scar revision surgery using an advanced suture method, which concurs with the previous answer from Dream Hospital. It will cost approximately 250,000 South Korean Won/cm or (~$221 USD/cm)
Hang Gang Soo is a burn and scar hospital in Seoul, and we specifically focus on this kind of treatment, and we also serve patients from Mongolia.
